Churchdown Village Little Learners

Churchdown Village Little Learners

Key Person

Building strong, nurturing relationships at Little Learners

At Little Learners, relationships are the foundation of everything we do. Young children thrive when they feel safe, understood and connected to the adults who care for them. Our Key Person approach ensures every child has a dedicated adult who truly knows them, supports their wellbeing and champions their learning journey.

What is a Key Person?

A key person is the familiar, trusted adult who builds a close, secure relationship with your child. They are the person who:

  • Offers comfort, reassurance and encouragement
  • Gets to know their interests, routines and needs
  • Supports their learning and emotional development
  • Keeps you informed and involved

This special bond helps children feel confident, secure and ready to explore.

Why it matters

Our approach is rooted in attachment theory, which highlights how strong early relationships help children feel safe enough to learn, play and take risks. In simple terms:

  • Children need a consistent, caring adult to feel secure
  • Feeling safe helps them explore and learn with confidence
  • Warm, responsive relationships support emotional wellbeing and resilience

Your child’s key person becomes their “safe base,” helping them navigate new experiences and big feelings.

Supporting emotional wellbeing and self regulation

Your child’s key person plays a central role in helping them understand and manage their emotions. This includes:

  • Talking about feelings in simple, child friendly ways
  • Supporting self regulation through calm, nurturing interactions
  • Offering comfort during moments of worry or separation
  • Encouraging independence at a pace that feels right
  • Every classroom includes a calm space where children can rest, reflect or take a moment with the support of an adult.

Sharing learning with families

We believe communication with families should be open, meaningful and easy. To support this, we use Evidence Me, our online learning platform, where your child’s key person shares:

  • Observations
  • Photos and videos
  • Learning updates

This helps you stay connected to your child’s day and celebrate their progress.  These updates help you feel reassured and informed, especially during the early settling in period.

Working in partnership with parents

We know that parents and caregivers are children’s first and most important educators. Your child’s key person will:

  • Share regular updates
  • Celebrate achievements
  • Listen to your insights
  • Work with you on routines, behaviour and wellbeing
  • Create a consistent approach between home and pre-school

Together, we build a strong, supportive partnership around your child.

A consistent, caring presence

From settling into daily routines, your child’s key person is there to guide, comfort and encourage them. They help your child feel safe, seen, heard and valued. This nurturing relationship is at the heart of our practice and one of the reasons children at Little Learners grow into confident, curious and happy learners.
